Episode 049: Breakthrough

Chapter 2: Guidance of the Bell

The area surrounding the watchtower had devolved into a chaotic battlefield.

The Wind God’s cyclone spiraled around the tower, whipping up a tempest of sand and splinters. Though the Observers’ voices remained detached, a flicker of frantic urgency had begun to bleed into their movements.

The townspeople stood in the distance, frozen like shadows. Waves of sand kicked up by the wind washed over their feet, yet not a soul dared to speak. To Koyoi, the silence felt suffocatingly heavy. She tightened her grip on the drawstring pouch in her arms.

Inside a nearby house, she caught sight of a small child clutching their mother’s sleeve, staring up at her. For a fleeting second, their eyes met. A surge of heat rushed through Koyoi’s chest. I’ll get us out of here, she swore. I promise.

"Commencing elimination."

The Observers’ voices overlapped.

The nets they cast unfurled in mid-air into webs of pale, ghostly light, closing in to ensnare Asahi. The nets tore through the wind, making the very air vibrate with sharp, prickling static.

In the wake of the nets, the temperature plummeted, momentarily freezing the air. Koyoi’s cheeks stung, and the sensation in her fingertips began to fade. It felt as though the Observers’ technology was trying to leech away even their body heat.

Koyoi grit her teeth and hugged the pouch closer. A faint warmth radiated from the Wind God within, and feeling returned to her chilled fingers. I’m holding something worth protecting, she thought. That’s why I can still stand.

"Too easy!"

Asahi spun on his heel, cleaving through the web of light in a single, fluid stroke.

His blade, wreathed in divine energy, sliced the intangible net as if it were physical cloth. The severed light scattered like mist, hitting the ground and vanishing into nothingness. Every time Asahi’s sword rent the light, a sharp gust of wind followed. Pushed forward by that breeze, Koyoi spread her arms wide, the mouth of her pouch still open.

"Koyoi, look up! Hurry!"

Responding to Asahi’s shout, Koyoi cradled the pouch with both hands.

"Wind, more! Even stronger!"

『……RRRAAAAAAAGH!』

The Wind God bellowed.

The cyclone grew even more massive, swallowing the watchtower whole. The wooden structure groaned and shrieked in protest. The Observers' machines, unable to withstand the sheer pressure, were ripped from the earth. Red lamps blinked erratically; their mechanical whirring distorted and broke.

Roof tiles took flight; wooden shards danced in the sky. The tornado was violent, yet at its heart lay Koyoi’s will. The moment her heart synchronized with the Wind God’s, the chaos smoothed out, and the vortex surrounding the tower transformed into a singular, solid pillar of air.

"Stabilization rate dropping. Error, error."

The Observers’ machines announced the anomaly. Though they prepared their next attack without a hint of agitation, a slight delay began to manifest in their clockwork movements.

Asahi didn't miss the opening.

He kicked off one of the Observers, using the momentum to sprint up the ladder of the vertical tower. The wood beneath his feet trembled; the wind tore at his hair. Asahi gripped the hilt of his sword and narrowed his eyes.

The wood of the ladder was ancient and rotting in places. Asahi kept his center of gravity low, testing each rung as he climbed. As the wind surged upward, his traveler’s cloak billowed behind him. The shadowy gaze of an Observer followed him for a split second, but the wall of wind cut them off.

"...Found you, the source!"

At the very top of the tower, right beside the bronze bell, a translucent cube floated in the air.

Inside, countless circuit-like patterns glowed, compressing the fluctuations harvested from the town into a brilliant, concentrated light. This was the core—the anchor maintaining the invisible wall. Even without touching it, a cold, oppressive pressure radiated from the object.

The light pulsed like a heartbeat, and Koyoi could tell it was choking the life out of the town. She felt that pressure rising from beneath her feet, and her heart ached. If we don't destroy that, the wind will be trapped forever.

Asahi leveled his sword in a mid-guard stance.

"Koyoi! Lend me your strength!"

"Right!"

Koyoi held the pouch toward the heavens.

"Wind—to Asahi’s blade!"

『……Here we go!』

A miniature cyclone coiled around Asahi’s sword. The blade became wreathed in a violent gale, emitting a brilliant emerald glow. The roar of the wind was sucked into the steel, and the air around them surged into a straight line.

Koyoi’s arms trembled. She focused on her breathing, pouring everything she had into the connection. The Wind God’s pulse thrummed inside the pouch, and Koyoi’s own heart began to beat in perfect rhythm. Wind swirled deep within her chest, and a heat flared from the core of her being. Closing her eyes, she prayed, funneling that heat toward the sword.

"Take this!"

With every ounce of his strength, Asahi cleaved the cube in two.

SHATTER!

It sounded as if the world itself had cracked. A high-pitched ring, like the sound of breaking glass, echoed throughout the entire town. Transparent fragments danced in the air, catching the sunlight as they fell. With every shard that vanished, the suffocating pressure of the wall grew thinner.

A moment later, the constant humming of the static noise cut to silence. Simultaneously, the heavy sense of confinement that had blanketed the town evaporated. The air grew light; the wind regained its natural flow.

"Stabilization lost. Retreating."

Realizing their objective was gone, the Observers vanished instantly into the shadows of the alleys. They didn't even bother to pursue Asahi; they simply faded with machine-like efficiency. All that remained were the silent wrecks of their machines, drained of their fluctuations.

"Phew... hah... hah..."

Asahi climbed down from the tower. He sheathed his sword and wiped the sweat from his brow with a rough hand. On the final rung, his foot slipped, and he reflexively grabbed the railing. When Koyoi reached out to help, Asahi gave a small, weary smirk. "I'm fine." That smile signaled the end of the battle.

"We did it, Asahi!"

As Koyoi ran toward him, Asahi gave a small, proud huff. "Yeah, well. Thanks to that little wind-brat over there."

『……I'm not... little!』

Koyoi felt the Wind God puff up inside the pouch. That tiny flash of indignation made her happy—it was proof he was back to his old self. She pressed the pouch to her ear and whispered, "Thank you." A small puff of wind swirled inside, giving her a cool breath against her cheek in place of an answer.

Looking toward the exit, the invisible wall had vanished without a trace. The path leading into the forest beckoned once more. Standing at the site of the former gate, the outside air came rushing in all at once.

"Let’s move," Asahi said. "Before they call in reinforcements."

"Right!"

The two of them broke into a run down the road, finally free.

Behind them, the people of Yamabuki-juku stood dazed, watching as the stagnant grey sky dissolved into a piercing blue. The wind swept through the town, swaying the tall grass and catching the townspeople’s hair as the air of the living finally returned. Somewhere, a child’s laughter mingled with the sound of a shop door opening—small, precious signs of a world waking up.

Feeling that warmth at her back, Koyoi looked ahead. The soil beneath her feet felt light, and her lungs filled with fresh air. With every breath, she reaffirmed the vow in her heart: she would bring this same light to the next town, and the town after that. Asahi nodded in silence, matching her stride. On their backs, the lingering gratitude of Yamabuki-juku remained—a gentle tailwind carrying them further into the horizon.

The sound of laughter cheered them on.
