When the "Shelf of Truth" in the deepest reaches of the Great Archive began its physical collapse, the absolute silence that had once reigned over the chamber shattered in an instant, replaced by an otherworldly cacophony—a true violence of sound.
The massive bookcases, which once boasted heights that pierced the ceiling, lost their anchoring in reality. They began to topple like a line of gargantuan dominoes, and from their shelves erupted tens of millions of volumes. This "avalanche of language" took on a terrifying physical mass, raining down mercilessly upon the heads of the three companions.
Every character, every stroke of the brush, sliced through the air like a sharpened blade. Each time they struck the ground, they pulverized the very bedrock of the Archive’s foundation—the crystalline substrate of the Universal Laws.
Koyoi gripped Kuon’s hand with bone-crushing intensity. Through the swirling blizzard of dust and soot, he sprinted toward the exit platform with every ounce of his strength.
"Don’t stop! If you look back, you’ll be cast 'Outside' the records in an instant!"
Kuon’s scream, strained to its absolute limit, pierced through the roar of the collapse and reached Koyoi’s ears. From the golden book tucked inside his robes—the Index of Truth—faint but potent remnants of divine aura continued to pulse. The energy physically pushed against the surrounding air, creating an unnatural pocket of empty space around them.
"What about Asahi?! He’s still inside...!"
Koyoi’s voice was small, choked with fear. Even as he ran, he tried to look back over his shoulder, only for Kuon to jerk his hand forward again. Inside his drawstring pouch, the Droplet God pulsed violently, emitting a pale blue light as if absorbing its master’s terror and desperation.
A mixture of tears and sweat trailed down Koyoi’s cheek, dripping away to be swallowed by the yawning chasms opening in the floorboards. The stone tiles beneath their feet shattered one after another, their fragments lashing against the pair’s shins. There was no room for the luxury of pain. Koyoi’s vision blurred white with dust and tears; the world ahead swayed and rippled like the sky viewed from the bottom of a deep pool.
Still, he ran.
He called Asahi’s name over and over in his heart, clinging to the coldness of Kuon’s hand as his only tether to this disintegrating world. Fragments of falling books caught in his hair, pelted his shoulders, and struck his back.
These volumes, which had once been someone’s memories, someone’s prayers, were now nothing more than debris wounding his flesh. Koyoi accepted even that pain. He felt as though he were listening to the final, dying voices of these records with his very skin.
From the far side of the collapsing shelves came the thunderous, rhythmic roar of steel clashing against steel.
Each strike was proof that Asahi was still fighting. With every impact, the air shuddered, sending shockwaves that whipped Koyoi’s hair across his face. Even as he ran, Kuon used the azure glow of his glass eye to scan for a safe path. Its light pierced straight through the choking dust, barely illuminating a way forward.
Every time the glass eye’s light flickered, Koyoi’s heart leapt into his throat. Kuon was nearing his limit as well. Yet, he refused to let the light die, and he never once let go of his hand.
Suddenly, Asahi appeared ahead of them. He was charging back toward them, having forced his way through the guardians' blockade, steam rising from his overheated body.
His greatsword glowed a dull, angry red, heated by the friction of clashing with the Laws of the world. Every time he swung it, the surrounding mist evaporated in a flash. Seeing the two of them, Asahi offered no words of greeting. Instead, he swung the massive blade in a horizontal arc, reducing the remaining guardians who tried to block their path into nothing but dust and theory.
"The shadows are thinning..." Asahi growled. "A sign that their threads of observation are snapping under the strain."
His voice was squeezed out between ragged breaths, yet it held not a single trace of fear. He hoisted the greatsword back onto his shoulder and grinned defiantly, his face smeared with the ash of the collapse. It was the kind of smile seen only on the battlefield—a flower blooming on the precipice of death.
Asahi took the lead, and they began to move again. Countless gashes ran across his back, and from them, the light of the World's Laws leaked out like silken threads. He didn't spare them a single glance. The skin visible through the gaps in his armor was blackened with soot and blood, and the blade of his greatsword was spider-webbed with cracks, yet its edge still held a sharp, lethal glint.
With every step Asahi took, the crumbling floorboards groaned under his weight. With every step, new fissures raced across the walls of the Archive.
Watching Asahi’s scarred back, Koyoi felt a sudden surge of heat in his chest. This man... he is always the one walking ahead of us.
No matter how broken his body became, no matter how much his essence was stripped away by the Laws, he never looked back. He simply fixed his gaze forward and continued to swing his sword. Koyoi couldn't find the words to describe how much he relied on the sight of that unwavering back. Instead, the Droplet God inside his pouch emitted a warm, gentle light, as if speaking its master’s gratitude for him.
Kuon, too, narrowed his eyes as he watched Asahi’s back through the glow of his glass eye. His usual cynical mask was gone, replaced by a look of quiet, profound respect.
Huddled together, the three of them sprinted through the final corridor of the dying Archive. Asahi’s sword batted away the debris falling from the ceiling; Kuon’s eye illuminated the cracks opening beneath their feet; and Koyoi’s pouch cast a thin veil of light around them, shielding them from the poisonous influence of the decaying records.
Behind them, the roar of the world’s end grew distant. At last, the faint, flickering light of the platform began to sway through the heavy curtain of mist.
