Episode 298: Whereabouts of Asahi's Sword, After

Chapter 10: Edge of the Wave

The morning light glinted off the blade, washing the steel in a stark, brilliant white.

Asahi began to unwrap the cloth. He moved carefully, one turn at a time. The weapon was clearly different from when he had last seen it by the flickering light of Hoshino’s campfire.

The fissure had closed.

To be precise, it hadn’t simply healed. The green crystals that had taken root at the bottom of the crack had spread, filling the gaps of the fracture until they became an integral part of the blade. Ore and steel had fused, melting into one another without a single seam.

"…Thing’s gone and changed on me."

Asahi lifted the blade to eye level. Verdant veins coursed through the silver of the steel, creeping from the hilt to the very tip like a network of capillaries. It looked alive.

Kuon turned his prosthetic eye toward it. A pale blue light crawled across the surface of the blade, licking over the steel as it projected the internal structure into his vision.

"The crystals have integrated into the steel’s molecular structure," Kuon observed. "It appears to be attempting to return to the state it held when ore and flora existed as one beneath the earth of Hoshino."

"Return?" Asahi knit his brows.

"To the state it was in before it was forged into a weapon. Back when it was part of the Great Cycle. However, the reversion is incomplete. The ore has awakened, yet it maintains the form of a sword."

Asahi leveled the sword and gave the air a single, sharp sweep.

The feedback was unlike anything he’d felt before. The weight remained the same, but as he swung through, the whistle of cloven air was followed by a faint, lingering resonance. It wasn't the ring of struck metal. A soft vibration, like the humming of a plucked string, traveled through his wrist and up his arm.

"…It’s singing."

Asahi swung again, this time in an upward diagonal slash. The vibration shifted. It was the same sword, yet the note changed depending on the angle of the arc.

Koyoi stepped closer, holding his drawstring pouch toward the blade. The Shizuku inside began to throb, pulsing in perfect time with the sword’s vibrations.

"They’re resonating," he whispered. "The Shizuku and the sword."

Asahi lowered the weapon and stared at the edge. The green veins were glowing slightly brighter than before. Perhaps the act of swinging it had activated the crystals within.

"Before… this thing just cut."

"And now?" Koyoi asked.

Asahi picked up a stone from the ground and set it atop the flat of the blade. The moment the stone touched the edge, fine cracks spiderwebbed across its surface. It hadn't been sliced; the stone’s internal structure had resonated with the blade's vibration until it simply fell apart of its own accord.

"I didn't cut it. I just touched it."

Asahi inspected the cross-section of the stone. The surface was smooth, lacking the jagged roughness of something shattered by brute force.

Kuon was already scribbling notes into his ledger.

"It is interfering with the Principles," Kuon said. "The sword is making contact with the physical structure of the object and shaking the very 'description' of its existence. It no longer destroys the target; it touches the target's origin."

"What the hell does 'touching the origin' mean?"

"Through resonance, it touches the 'description'—the logic that allows a stone to be a stone. When that description is shaken, the bonds dissolve. It does not break; it unravels."

Asahi stared at the sword in silence. After a long pause, he let out a short, sharp huff of breath.

"It’s not broken. It’s transformed."

Kuon looked up. "That is the correct assessment. Ore was originally a part of the world’s cycle. Its use as a weapon was, in fact, a deviation from its true purpose. Now, it is merely returning to what it once was."

"If it's 'returning,' can I still use the damn thing?" Asahi’s voice held more of a genuine question than irritation.

Kuon narrowed his prosthetic eye. "The sword will decide that. Now that the ore has awakened, there is a possibility it will choose its wielder."

"And if it doesn't choose me?"

"That sword changed while in your hands. It has reacted to no one else."

Asahi adjusted his grip. As his fingers tightened around the hilt, the green veins pulsed once beneath his palm. It was warm. The same warmth he remembered from the subterranean depths of Hoshino flowed into his hand.

"The wielder decides what the tool is. That's what I said before, wasn't it?"

Asahi was remembering his own words.

"But maybe this thing isn't a tool anymore."

Koyoi watched Asahi and his sword, cradling his pouch to his chest. The pulsation of the Shizuku beat in the same rhythm as the green veins of the blade. Two fragments of the same world, the same cycle. The Shizuku that carried names, and the sword that touched the Principles.

"Asahi."

"Yeah?"

"I think that sword needs a name. If it’s changed, maybe it should have a new one."

Asahi pointed the blade toward the sky. The morning sun filtered through the green veins, casting a faint, shimmering pattern onto the ground. The light split between steel and crystal, overlapping two shadows into one.

"…Too soon. I still don't know what this thing is gonna become."

Asahi spread the cloth and began to rewrap the sword. He was careful not to touch the crystals directly, avoiding the traces of the old fissure. But the tension from before was gone. He didn't handle it like a fragile object anymore; he handled it like a living thing.

As he slid the sword back onto his back, a faint vibration traveled through the leather strap and into his spine. The sword was settling in, adjusting to his body heat.

"Let’s go," Asahi said, his voice sounding the same as always.

But as he started to walk, he felt as though the weight on his back had become just a little bit lighter.

It wasn't just the sword that had changed. The hand that gripped it was beginning to change, too.
