Episode 263: Bleaching of the Staircase

Chapter 9: The Map's Turning Point

Escaping the "Ice Well"—the colossal prison of records—the three companions finally reached the furthest edge of Starfall Town.

There, at a place that felt like the physical end of the world, stood the "Stairway of Providence." True to its name, it was a forbidden zone that physically inhaled the breath of the living, grinding it into the dust of pure information. It was a massive bridge of logic suspended over a pitch-black abyss.

At the entrance hung a gargantuan lantern. Each time it flickered unnaturally, pushed to its critical limit, particles of information drifted down like snow. The sound of stone grinding against stone was no longer a song of salvation, but the sacred first cry of a world being reconfigured. Koyoi planted his feet firmly against the stone surface, constantly gauging the distance of the sound.

Here, the shadows still held a faint, lingering thickness. The stairway stretched upward in a single, uncompromising line toward the distant sky. Each step was narrow, barely wide enough to accommodate a human foot, and between the tiers hung thin, mist-like membranes of data. To step through was to feel those membranes cling to the skin, attempting to peel away fragments of memory, layer by layer.

As Koyoi placed a foot on the first step, he felt the Rain God’s Drop pulse within his drawstring pouch like a sharp warning. The stairway itself was a massive sieve, constructed by the will of Providence—a cold, precision-engineered selection device designed to shake off the unfit.

The lantern’s flickering intensified. Every time the information snow gathered on his eyelashes, the very silhouette of the world trembled. Yet, the three did not stop. The wind howling up from the abyss was cold enough to make bones creak, and riding that wind from the depths below came the intermittent, haunting moans of the nameless.

Asahi led the way, his right hand resting on the hilt of his greatsword. He tested each step with a weight born of certainty, a stride forged on countless battlefields. With every footfall, the stone groaned, and the membranes of information drifting across the stairs parted to the left and right as if cowed by his overwhelming spirit. His back was as straight as a steel rod; he never once lowered his gaze to his feet, staring instead into the darkness ahead as if to pierce it.

The frigid draft from the abyss whipped his short hair, but his pace did not falter by a hair’s breadth. Only the white bloom of his knuckles on the sword’s hilt betrayed the true severity of the climb. Occasionally, the stone steps would tilt toward the void, but Asahi shifted his center of gravity instantly, maintaining a posture that was utterly immovable.

Kuon walked with his ledger spread open across his knees, the blue light of his artificial eye casting a glow over the pages. He continued his forward progress without pause.

To an ordinary observer, the sight of him climbing a treacherous staircase without ever looking away from his book would have seemed nothing short of reckless. But for Kuon, analyzing the structure of these stairs was the only way to keep them alive. The scanning range of his prosthetic eye was many times that of a human's; the blue scanning lines exposed even the invisible traps hidden on the undersides of the stone steps.

Beads of cold sweat formed on his brow, and the veins at his temples throbbed ominously, yet his slender fingers never ceased their rhythmic turning of the pages. Within this man, a maddening thirst for the truth and a cold, calculating drive to protect his comrades lived in perfect, paradoxical harmony.

"…Look at this. This is the speed of 'Correction' by Providence," Kuon said, his voice trailing off into a chilling sneer. "Before we can even decipher the truth, they’re trying to physically 'bleach' the boundaries of the world—to make it as if none of this ever existed."

His voice held a mixture of rage and a detached, clinical admiration. A ghost of a smile, colored by hostility toward the efficiency of the Observers, flickered across his thin lips. Though there was no wind, the pages of the ledger flipped violently; Koyoi could see that half the characters written there were fading into a pale white even as they watched. The moment the truth was read, it was deleted as data.

It was nothing less than a silent massacre of recorded history. Kuon ground his teeth, pushing the output of his artificial eye to its absolute limit, desperate to sear every fading character into his memory banks.

"…Bleached?" Koyoi spoke up, his voice trembling. "Does that mean… the 'pain' we’re feeling right here will eventually disappear into that whiteness too?"

His voice was nearly swallowed by the pitch-black abyss surrounding the stairs, but the Drop in his pouch glowed with a soft, protective light, giving his words a sliver of strength. Terror flickered in Koyoi’s eyes. If pain were to vanish, it meant everything they felt—their bonds with the gods, their feelings for one another, every memory gathered on this journey—would return to nothingness.

At that realization, the boy’s knees shook, and the stone beneath him creaked unsteadily. But the warmth of the pouch, the faint heat felt through the cloth against his hip, barely managed to still the trembling. Sensing its master's fear, the Rain God intensified the light of the Drop, attempting to illuminate the darkness in the youth's heart from within.

Koyoi let out a long, shaky breath he hadn't realized he was holding.

The knot of terror in his chest dissolved into a white mist in the freezing air. Even that breath was instantly dismantled into particles of information, consumed by the darkness of the abyss in a heartbeat. Koyoi was forced to realize, with painful clarity, just how fragile his existence was in this place.

And yet, the light of the Drop shining in his pouch continued to emit a certain, undeniable heat—a warmth that even the sieve of Providence could not erase.

Asahi kept his hand on his sword, his eyes fixed on the deepest part of the path. Something was waiting for them at the end of these stairs. The lantern flared with a sudden, violent brilliance, stretching their three shadows long across the black void.

Those shadows, too, were beginning to fade at the edges, as if being eroded by the particles of information.

"…Let's go," Asahi said, without looking back. "The answer is waiting on the other side."

There was a weight to his words that transcended mere language.

He had chosen the "Trial of Silent Records," the most grueling ordeal in existence. He intentionally left the fluctuations of sound as they were, choosing to maintain the "Boundary" of Reason by sacrificing a portion of his own soul. Every minute, the "Breath of the Threshold" grew deeper, and the unstable seams of Providence were being redrawn beneath his feet with a resounding crack.

The strength in his hand gripping the greatsword was no longer for cutting down enemies, but solely for carving a path for the two following behind him. But within him now lived the thermal energy of that "Drop of Light" he had received from the boy. There was not a single reason left for him to stop or hesitate.

One step at a time, the three continued to climb the Stairway of Providence.

The wind of the Bleaching blew mercilessly, shaving away slivers of their memories. Yet, as long as they kept each other's backs in sight, their forward progress never faltered.

In the distance, the pale blue flame of the lantern wavered. Guided by that light, with steady, certain footsteps, the three drew closer to the place where the answers of Providence lay sleeping.
