Episode 232: The Bleached Station

Chapter 8: Sand Boundary

The Fog Train came to a halt at Nakaoka Station.

The blizzard of information surrounding them ceased instantly. In its place settled an eerie blankness—a silence heavy with the weight of millions of lost records.

Koyoi wiped a film of soot from the windowpane, peering out at the station he had never seen before.

With a final metallic shriek, the wheels went still. An absolute "stasis of information" settled over the car—a pressure like a wind generated by the Observers' instruments.

The moment the doors groaned open, the outside air surged in. It wasn't just a draft, but a deluge of frozen silence with a staggering weight. The chill bit deep into Koyoi’s marrow, and he instinctively wrapped his arms around himself.

A fine black powder clung to his palm. Rubbing it between his fingers released the faint scent of charred paper. Koyoi knew intuitively that this was no mere dust; it was the scent of countless records that had been bleached away here. Inside his pouch, the droplet trembled in response. He pulled it close, cupping it gently to soothe it.

A pale, mossy light seeped from the station walls. This wasn't biological; it was the crystallized residue of records piled over eons. Above them, the ceiling dissolved into a darkness so deep it felt as though the sky itself had vanished, replaced by an unfathomable void.

Ancient script carved into the seat armrests flickered in the pale light. Perhaps they were the names of forgotten gods, or the silent screams of the last to be effaced here. As the light faded, the characters sank back into the rusted iron.

Kuon leaned close to the Ledger, his artificial eye narrowing. The characters on the page were losing their color, reacting to the layers of blankness permeating the station. As the Ledger was encroached upon by the station's power, the golden script faded to silver. Kuon grit his teeth, pushing his artificial eye to its limit to sear at least one vanishing word into his memory.

Beads of sweat glistened in the azure light. His breathing was heavy yet precise—a frantic struggle between his concentration and the Ledger’s erasure.

"Look at this... this is the 'redefinition' of the World-Order," Kuon growled. "The Observers are physically bleaching reality. They’re erasing the truth before we can even decipher it."

The usual irony was gone from his voice, replaced by a low, raspy growl of rage and frustration. He traced the edge of his artificial eye—a habit born of extreme tension. His left hand, pinning down the Ledger, trembled.

The truth they had staked their lives on was being erased without a sound. Kuon exhaled and intensified the blue glow of his eye. It was his own form of resistance—a silent declaration of war against this place. The pages began to regain a hint of color in the blue light, and a bitter smile played across his lips.

"Bleached? Does that mean the names of those children... will they all just turn white, too?"

Koyoi’s question sounded like a child reaching for a hand in the dark. He pressed the pouch to his chest, relying on the droplet's faint warmth. In his mind, the faces of the gods he had met, saved, and named flickered and vanished.

The feel of those tiny palms, those fleeting smiles, the warmth of their tears... if those memories were bleached white, what had their journey been for? Koyoi bit his lip, fighting back tears. Yet the droplet continued to emit a steady, warm light in response to his sorrow.

Asahi walked ahead in silence, his sword resting on his shoulder. His rhythmic footsteps were the only sound. Each echo was swallowed by the depths, as if the station itself were recording his progress.

His broad shoulders seemed to push through the layers of blankness. His back radiated the resolve of a warrior who supported his comrades with his presence rather than words. His certain gait breathed strength back into Koyoi and Kuon.

"...The night is still long. We will drag the true 'answer' of the World-Order out from that point. Until then, we move."

His words were few, but they carried the pride of a survivor and an unwavering trust. The blade on his shoulder caught the azure light, its reflection softly illuminating Koyoi’s cheek.

Without looking back, Asahi walked with an unshakable stride into the heart of this graveyard of Laws. Guided by his footsteps, Koyoi wiped his tears and Kuon clutched the Ledger. They stepped onto the flagstones as the layers of blankness swallowed their footprints.

Behind them, even the traces of their arrival were vanishing. Yet no one looked back. They kept their eyes fixed ahead as the cold wind whipped through their hair. There was no turning back. Their footsteps in this hollow station were the final record of their passing.
