Episode 223: Collapse of the Scales

Chapter 8: Sand Boundary

Taking advantage of the narrow opening Asahi created by putting his life on the line to hold back the shadow forces, Koyoi reached out. His slender right hand stretched straight toward the Golden Ice Shard at the heart of the frozen altar.

The instant his fingertips brushed that crystalline record of cold indifference, the true voices of the gods flooded his mind—vivid and profoundly tragic. These were the deities who had once nourished the lands of Nakaoka and answered the people's prayers.

This was no mere sequence of formulas recorded in a catalog. It was a record of obsession—of living gods who, even as their spiritual cores were shaved away moment by moment, chose to love humanity until the very end.

Koyoi felt the flickering flame within his chest pulse violently, unable to withstand the overwhelming mass of that love. He exhaled every last bit of air from his lungs.

From his right hand, a torrent of cold surged up his arm. It wasn't a simple change in temperature; it was the density of information itself—thousands of years of condensed memory.

Koyoi’s vision turned instantly white, but soon, a swirl of countless colors began to emerge from the void. The soft sunlight that once bathed this land. The voices of children in prayer. The scent of the wind sweeping across the cobblestones. The reflection of the moon upon the surface of a well.

Every one of them was a fragment of divine memory, trapped within the ice, waiting with singular devotion for thousands of years for someone to finally touch them.

Tears overflowed from Koyoi’s eyes. He could no longer tell if they were his own or those of the gods.

Around the altar, Asahi was locked in a gruesome struggle with the shadow army. With every swing of his greatsword, space itself seemed to tear, and golden sparks illuminated the sanctuary as bright as day. Even when he cut one shadow down, two more would rise from its remains, surging forward in an infinite tide.

Between the clashing of blades, the sound of Asahi’s ragged breathing and the brittle tick of sweat freezing on impact echoed through the chamber. Yet, his eyes held the fierce light of a warrior who refused any retreat; his feet would not allow him to take even a single step back.

The moment Koyoi touched the shard, Asahi tensed his muscles to the limit and swept away the wave of shadows with a single strike.

Beside the altar, Kuon knelt on one knee. His "Catalog" remained spread open as he focused the blue light of his artificial eye upon the ice shard. That azure glow intersected with the golden aurora streaming from the shard through Koyoi’s hand, weaving into a double helix in mid-air. Every time the two lights intertwined, the space itself groaned, and new cracks raced across the surface of the frozen pillars.

Beads of cold sweat broke out on Kuon’s forehead, and the skin around his artificial eye grew swollen and bruised. This reckless overuse was surely eroding his body from within. Yet, Kuon gritted his teeth, never letting the focus of his blue gaze waver. He was driven by nothing but cold calculation—the knowledge that everything would be in vain if they faltered now—and an unwavering trust in his comrades.

"…I found it. This is the world’s 'First Word.' Those 'Observers' physically imprisoned the gods' freedom within this single fragment… using it as a wedge for the world."

Wiping away the soot-like blood trickling from his artificial eye, Kuon let out a command of victory. The golden book in his coat resonated with the aurora of the ice shard, and the time within the space began to accelerate all at once, as if a spell were breaking. The black blood dripping from his eye glowed blue the moment it touched the frozen floor, tracing complex patterns like ancient script.

Kuon utilized even his pain as a tool, sharpening the vision of his artificial eye to its absolute limit. The pages of the "Catalog" erupted in light, and every character inscribed within converged into a single thread of radiance toward the shard.

A faint movement stirred Kuon’s lips. Koyoi couldn't tell if it was a smile or a grimace of unbearable pain. He only understood, with a sharp ache in his chest, that Kuon had been paying the price of that eye for this exact moment.

"…Freedom! To hell with this rigged scale! I’m going to smash your records to pieces, right here, right now!"

With a roar, Asahi lunged off the ground. He brought his greatsword down with his full weight, sundering the brass scales held by the Chief Observer in a single blow.

The impact shook the atmosphere, and every frozen pillar in the sanctuary emitted a low groan. Asahi’s muscles screamed, and fresh blood seeped from between the fingers gripping his sword, but he stifled the pain through gritted teeth. Standing there, treading upon the wreckage of the shattered scales, he embodied a beast’s pride—yielding to nothing. As the tip of his greatsword struck the ice floor, the shockwave rippled through the sanctuary like a stone cast into a pond.

As the scales shattered with a physical crack, what spilled out was a muddy torrent of unverified records—vast amounts of information that had been suppressed by the laws of the world for millennia. This deluge rewrote the boundaries of the world minute by minute, banishing the cold, fixed gaze of the "Observers" into the void in an instant. The torrent raced across the ice, washed over the base of the pillars, and spiraled upward toward the roofless sky.

Within that flood were fragments of countless stories that the "Observers" had once judged unnecessary and erased. As they reconstructed themselves in the air, the atmosphere of the sanctuary began to regain a faint, flickering warmth.

Koyoi clutched his drawstring pouch tightly, as if protecting something fragile. He felt the three gods dwelling within finally reclaiming their true forms, their presence vibrating through him like a newborn’s first cry.

Inside the pouch, the droplets grew warm simultaneously. The droplet of the Rain God felt as warm as a tear; the droplet of the River God pulsed with the strength of a wave. That heartbeat traveled through Koyoi’s body into the altar’s shard, causing it to glow with renewed brilliance. The voices of the imprisoned gods returned one by one, and the air in the sanctuary slowly thawed.

Koyoi could not stop his tears, but they were no longer shed in sorrow. They were tears of wordless relief for those who had finally recovered their voices.

"…The bell remains silent. …But that charged silence is the only sacred blank from which we can rebuild a new order."

Kuon’s whispered words reached the three of them with strange clarity, even amidst the roar of the collapsing sanctuary. Koyoi wiped his eyes, pulled the pouch close to his chest, and stood up.

The bell did not ring. Yet, within that silence, he felt something new beginning to sprout. That sensation didn't just vibrate beneath his feet; it made the flame deep within his chest burn brighter and stronger than he had ever felt before.

Asahi shouldered his greatsword once more, breathing heavily but wearing a defiant smirk. Kuon tucked the "Catalog" back into his coat and silently stood, wiping the black blood from his eye with his sleeve. When Koyoi tightened the string of his pouch, the three droplets pulsed in response.

Toward that sacred blank, the three of them began to walk once more. While the roar of the crumbling sanctuary echoed behind them, their steps remained straight and unwavering, fixed firmly toward the future.
