# Episode 210: Toward the End of the Chain

Kuon spread the catalog across his knees.

Fewer than ten pages remained. Upon one of them, he began to etch three distinct points in a shimmering blue light.

"Shimozato."

At the upper right, he drew a mark like an ice crystal.

"Hoshifuri Town."

At the upper left, a ripple of water.

"Kaizu Town."

And at the bottom, a vortex of mud.

As he connected the three points with lines, an equilateral triangle emerged. In its exact center, Kuon etched a small, delicate cross.

"Churyo. The entrance to the Archive."

Koyoi peered down at the triangle. The three towns aligned like stars in a constellation.

"So this triangle is the 'chain' the Observers forged?"

"Exactly," Kuon replied. "They fixed the names in place using three forms of preservation, sealing the path to the Archive. They froze it in ice, washed it away with water, and buried it in mud. We have passed through all three."

"Which means we’ve broken the chain?"

"Not broken. We have seen its contents. The path to Churyo opens only to those who have looked upon what was hidden."

Kuon closed the catalog.

Asahi, still leaning against the wall, shifted his crossed arms. "And once we step into the Archive, what changes?"

Kuon’s expression grew somber. "This catalog will become meaningless."

"Meaningless?"

"Everything I have read until now has been a copy. The Archive holds the originals. The moment the copy and the original are brought together in the same place... the copy reverts to being nothing more than ordinary paper."

Kuon traced the cover of the catalog with his fingertips. These pages had recorded hundreds of names. This catalog had guided them—lit in blue, deciphered line by line, leading the three of them here. Soon, it would be just paper.

"I’m prepared for it. But to be honest, I’ll miss it."

Asahi let out a sharp grunt. "Copies are for cowards."

Kuon looked up.

A brief silence passed. Then the corner of his mouth lifted slightly. It wasn't quite a laugh, but a smaller expression—one of quiet acknowledgment.

"...Perhaps you're right."

From deep within the station, the whistle of the Mist Train echoed. The low, long sound seemed to wash away the heavy scent of mud clinging to Kaizu Town.

The three of them stood and headed for the platform.

The train sat waiting, draped in a shroud of white fog. The doors slid open. The interior was empty; the fabric of the seats felt damp to the touch, and the world outside the windows was still lost in white.

Koyoi was the first to board. Asahi followed, and Kuon was the last to step inside. The doors hissed shut.

With two short blasts of the whistle, the train began to move.

The haze on the windows began to thin.

The rooftops of Kaizu Town receded into the distance. Beyond them, the tower of Hoshifuri Town shimmered like a ghost, and further still, the white mountain ridge of Shimozato hovered on the horizon. The three towns sat aligned in the pre-dawn sky like three points of light.

Kuon pressed his hand against the glass, narrowing his eyes.

"They look like a constellation."

Koyoi nodded. The drawstring pouch at her chest pulsed quietly. The memories of the three wells had mingled together, settling into a single, steady warmth.

Asahi closed his eyes and laid his sword across his knees.

The train gathered speed. The three points of light drifted toward the edge of the window and were eventually swallowed by the mist.

Even if they turned to look back, there was nothing left to see.
