Chapter 7: Distance of the Lantern

# Chapter 207: Resonance of the Kamiatsume Beads

The soles of his feet went numb.

It came from the ground—not a simple vibration, but something deeper. A low, bone-deep thrum that seemed to touch him directly. Tiny grains of sand on the highway danced ever so slightly, the tremor traveling through Koyoi’s boots and up into his shins.

Koyoi stopped and looked down. On the surface, the earth remained unchanged. The sand was dry, the stones lay where they had fallen. And yet, through his soles, he felt something rising from the depths. A slow, steady pulse, like the beating of a subterranean vein.

The pouch at his waist bucked.

The cloth bag jumped as if struck from the inside. Koyoi instinctively pressed his hand against it. The droplets were thrashing—not just one, but all of them. Each vibrated with its own distinct rhythm, colliding against one another within the fabric.

"Kuon-kun—"

"I know."

Kuon’s artificial eye was wide open. Azure light spilled from his left eye, tracing thin lines through the air. He held the Catalog tucked under his arm, its covers still closed. Koyoi realized that the information was flowing directly into his mind; he didn't even need to look at the pages.

"It’s the three wells," Kuon said.

His voice was low—not the flat tone of a typical analysis, but a depth born of absolute certainty.

"The ice of Shimosato. The water of Hoshifuri-machi. The tides of Kaizu-no-machi. When we visited the three wells, their rhythms were imprinted onto the droplets. Now, those three are trying to merge."

The pouch began to shake even more violently. It bucked so hard the drawstring dug into his hip bone. Koyoi pressed the bag against his chest with both hands. Through the cloth, the heat of the droplets reached every one of his ribs. His own heart began to race, synchronizing with their frantic pulse.

"The waves are beginning to align," Kuon noted. The lines of azure light crossed in the air, forming a triangle. The three vertices pulsed with light.

"Ice, water, and tide. Each held its own rhythm: the sharp vibration of frost, the steady flow of melting, and the deep, slow swell of the sea. Now, they are merging into a single chord."

Asahi dropped to one knee, pressing his palm against the earth. Sand spilled through his fingers.

"The ground is singing."

His voice was hushed. Asahi’s expression had shifted—it wasn't the face of a swordsman, but the face of someone listening intently, a look of childhood concentration he hadn't seen in years.

"It’s like a bell. Like someone struck a massive bell deep underground. It’s distant, heavy... I can feel it in my gut."

Koyoi felt it too—or rather, he sensed it. Not with his ears, but in his ribs. Behind his heart. A vibration far too low to be called a sound crawled up through his body. His teeth ached; the edges of his vision blurred.

Then, the pouch began to glow.

Rays of light leaked through the gaps in the fabric. Each droplet pulsed with a different color. The one from Shimosato shone silver-white; the Hoshifuri droplet turned a pale amber; and the Kaizu droplet glowed a deep indigo. These three colors bled through the cloth, staining Koyoi’s chest.

The lights shifted, swirled, and finally, dissolved into one another.

The silver, amber, and indigo lost their boundaries, melting into a single hue. A nameless color. Koyoi stared at it, mesmerized. It was a light he had never seen before—neither warm nor cold, simply deep. It resembled the darkness found when peering into the bottom of a well, yet it wasn't darkness at all. It was light.

"Resonance," Kuon whispered. The azure glow had vanished from his eye. Perhaps it had reached its limit, or perhaps the light overflowing from the pouch was now so bright that his artificial eye was no longer necessary. The glow reflected on Kuon’s cheek, painting him in a color that was no longer blue.

"I told you the three wells were the key. This is what it meant. The droplets imprinted the three waves and bound them into one. This resonance..."

Kuon trailed off.

Silence.

The rumbling of the earth ceased. The light from the pouch faded. The trembling of the droplets smoothed out, shifting from a turbulent pulse to a mirror-still calm. The sounds of the highway returned: the rustle of the wind, the distant cry of a bird. They had only been silent because the resonance had swallowed everything else.

Koyoi pulled the pouch away from his chest and rested it in his palm. The fabric had returned to his own body temperature. However, he could tell the droplets inside had changed. Their weight was different. The beads that had been rattling independently just moments ago now sat heavy and still, like a single mass. The three colors were gone; every droplet now held the same deep, internal light.

Asahi stood up and brushed the dirt from his palm. Pale dust remained on his knees.

"Is it over?"

"It’s just begun."

Kuon opened the Catalog. The azure light returned. Upon the page, characters began to surface where there had been nothing before. Like ink seeping from the very fibers of the paper, a path began to take shape in faint, dark strokes.

"I see the way to the Scriptorium."

Koyoi tied the pouch back to his waist. In his fingertips, the faint afterimage of the resonance still hummed.
