Episode 122: End of the Road, Beginning of the Road

Chapter 4: Seams of the Boundary

When the "Shelf of Truth" at the heart of the Scripture Repository succumbed to physical ruin, the absolute silence that once reigned was shattered, replaced in an instant by a violent roar that sounded inhuman.

Colossal stacks that once pierced the heavens lost their foundation, toppling like a line of dominoes. From their depths, tens of millions of volumes erupted—an "avalanche of words" that cascaded down upon the three companions without mercy.

Each stroke of the brush, each etched character, sliced through the air like a razor. With every impact, they ground the bedrock of Order beneath the repository into powder. Koyoi seized Kuon’s hand in a grip so fierce it threatened to break bone. Through a blinding blizzard of ash and soot, she sprinted toward the platform—their only exit.

"Don’t stop! Look back, and you’ll be cast outside the Record!"

Kuon’s voice, strained to its breaking point, tore through the thunderous roar of the collapse to reach Koyoi’s ears. Tucked against his chest, the golden volume—the Truth Index—still emanated intense ripples of Order. Its ghostly, pale-blue light flickered erratically, casting frantic shadows across their path.

"What about Asahi!? Is he still inside—!?"

Koyoi glanced back as Asahi charged toward them from ahead, steam rising from his body. He had been holding the line against the guardians by sheer force. His greatsword glowed a molten red, superheated where metaphysical laws collided; with every swing, the surrounding mist evaporated in a hiss of steam. Without a word, Asahi swept his massive blade in a horizontal arc, reducing the remaining guardians to dust.

"Move! The steel beast is sealing this reality!"

Following Asahi’s pointing finger, they saw it. Deep within the abyssal fog, the Mist Train let out a piercing whistle. Driven by its own survival instinct to flee the crumbling repository, its massive driving wheels ground against the steel rails with savage force. Belching pillars of obsidian smoke into the sky, it began to pull away—slowly, but with inevitable momentum. Koyoi drew one final breath, deep enough to sear her lungs, and threw every ounce of her being into a leap from the grime-streaked floor.

"Got it!"

Her slender fingers clamped onto the edge of the ice-cold steel door in a death grip. A heartbeat later, Asahi and Kuon followed, vaulting onto the steps of the accelerating carriage with a grace that defied gravity. As the three scrambled inside, the door slammed shut with a heavy thud. The sepulcher known as the Scripture Repository vanished, swallowed by an impenetrable curtain of mist.

An eerie silence descended over the interior, making the preceding violence feel like a fever dream. Yet, there was no comfort in this quiet. It was an oppressive stillness—as if the world itself had been rendered speechless by the weight of the truth they now carried.

Koyoi pressed a hand against the drawstring pouch at her waist. Inside, she felt the three deities begin to pulse with a soft heartbeat, as if welcoming her back. The droplet of the Rain God, the silver radiance of the Moon God, and the breath of the Wind God. These sacred legacies were no longer mere records. In her hand, they had become one unbreakable bond: the seed of light that would remake the world.
